"Native Americans undoubtedly practiced some form of birth control:
- a woman seldom had more than one or two children.
- Huichol tradition held that by drinking a liquid from a secret plant, you could avoid bearing children.
- Southwestern tribes believed that sterility could be artificially induced by chewing root of spotted cow bane, or infusion from a stone weed plant.
- Although there were various methods of birth control, invariably slips occurred; when this happened, and the woman was unmarried or unable to take care of the child, abortion was an option, obtainable by drinking herbal medicines. If this failed, the mother would bear the child and then take it into the woods and kill it.
