Jack Sures
Jack Sures is a Saskatchewan artist who was born in 1934, Manitoba. However he grew up in Melita and Winnipeg. In 1957 he got his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Manitoba and in 1959 he got his Master of Arts in Painting and Printmaking from Michigan State University. He traveled a lot in Europe and the Middle East and was hired in 1965 to set up printmaking and ceramic departments at the University of Regina. His earliest students were Marilyn Levine, Ann James and Victor Cicansky. He also started the Norman Mackenzie Art Gallery exhibition California Ceramics: Shaw, Frimkess, Gilhooly, Melchert in 1969 which introduced California Funk to Regina. Jack was influenced by from things like European surrealism and Asian ceramics. He is well known publicly for his mural commissions for example in Saskatoon at the Sturdy-Stone Centre and in Gatineau, Quebec at the Canadian Museum of Civilization. He has been a very inspiring artist to many students especially at the University of Regina. He passed away on May 12, 2018.
